BAR EXAM DATES AND FORMAT

2024: February 27-28, July 30-31

The South Carolina Bar Exam is a 2-day Uniform Bar Exam (UBE).

Day 1: Six 30-minute Multistate Essay Exam questions (MEE in the AM) and two 90-minute Multistate Performance Test questions (MPT in the PM).

Day 2: Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a 200-question, multiple-choice exam (100 questions in the AM, 100 questions in the PM).

Multistate Performance Test (MPT)

Multistate Performance Test “Closed universe” practical questions using instructions, factual data, cases, statutes and other reference material supplied by examiners.

Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam

South Carolina requires an MPRE scaled score of 77. The score must be from an administration of the MPRE that occurred within three (3) years of the date on which the application for the admission is filed with the Clerk of the Supreme Court.

Scoring

The MEE and MPT scores are scaled to the MBE.

MBE weighted 50%
MEE weighted 30%
MPT weighted 20%

A total scaled score of 266 or higher is required to pass the South Carolina Bar Exam.

Additional Requirements

Course of Study on South Carolina Law

Applicants for admission to the South Carolina Bar Exam are required to complete the Course of Study on South Carolina Law as a requirement for admission. Applicants will be provided login credentials to access the course by the SC Bar after the application for admission is accepted. The online course contains a series of eleven video modules on major areas of SC law, each followed by multiple-choice questions.

Reciprocity

Acceptance of MBE Score

South Carolina does not accept an MBE score from an exam taken in another jurisdiction.

Admission on Motion

South Carolina does not provide for admission on motion. In narrow situations, a special application may be made by a dean or tenured professor at the University of South Carolina or Charleston School of Law. Additional requirements apply.

Admission by UBE Score Transfer

Applicants who have obtained a scaled score of at least 266 on a Uniform Bar Exam taken in another jurisdiction within the preceding three years may apply for admission based on that score. Additional requirements apply.
