BAR EXAM DATES AND FORMAT

2024: February 27-28, July 30-31

The Alabama Bar Exam is a 2-day Uniform Bar Exam (UBE).

Day 1: Two 90-minute Multistate Performance Test (MPT) questions in the AM, and six 30-minute Multistate Essay Exam (MEE) questions in the PM.

Day 2: Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), a 200-question, multiple-choice exam (100 questions in the AM, 100 questions in the PM).

Subjects Tested

Multistate Performance Test “Closed universe” practical questions using instructions, factual data, cases, statutes and other reference material supplied by examiners.

A scaled score of 75 on the MPRE is required for admission within 25 months prior to or after passing the Alabama Bar Exam.

Scoring

The MEE and MPT scores are scaled to the MBE, with the MBE weighted 50%, the MEE 30% and the MPT 20%. The scores are combined to determine if the applicant has achieved the minimum passing score of 260 points out of 400.

Additional Requirements

Before being admitted to the practice of law in Alabama, all applicants shall complete a course on Alabama law, the content and delivery of which shall be determined by the Board of Bar Examiners.

The course consists of eight (8) online learning modules covering the following subjects: Alabama Constitution; Alternative Dispute Resolution; Civil Litigation; Criminal Law; Family Law; Real Property; Torts; and Wills & Trusts/Probate.

Bar Examination applicants will be given access to the course approximately 7 – 10 days after the administration of the bar examination.

Reciprocity

Acceptance of MBE Score

Applicants may transfer an MBE scaled score of at least 140 achieved in another jurisdiction if taken within 25 months prior to the next scheduled exam. Applicant must have passed the bar exam and be admitted to practice in the transferring jurisdiction.

Carryover of MBE Score

An applicant who has failed the bar exam in Alabama but achieved a scaled score of at least 140 on the MBE, may carryover that MBE score to a future exam within 25 months of earning that score.

Carryover of Written Test Score

An applicant who has failed the bar exam in Alabama but achieved a scaled score of at least 140 on the MEE and MPT, may carryover that MEE/MPT score to a future exam within 25 months of earning that score.

Admission on Motion

An applicant may make a motion for admission to the Alabama State Bar based on reciprocity if the applicant fulfills the applicable requirements and is from a reciprocity state.

Admission by UBE Score Transfer

In order to be eligible for admission in Alabama by transfer of a UBE score, the score must have been earned in a single administration of the UBE, the score must be 260 or higher, and the admission of the applicant must be finalized within 25 months of the date the transferred score was earned. In addition, the applicant must satisfy all other admission requirements including, but not limited to, satisfaction of the MPRE requirement, completion of the online course on Alabama law, and certification by the Committee on Character & Fitness.
